The Divorce Hotel

A Dutch entrepreneur is bringing this concept to American cities. The concept? Check-in to the divorce hotel by Friday, be divorced by the end of the weekend.

As a divorce attorney, I am skeptical of this scenario. It seems likely that if people have the means to afford to undertake this, their financial affairs are already so complicated as to render the idea of rushing the divorce through in a weekend risky at the very least.

Many states require a statutory "cooling off" period. In Kansas, a judge cannot grant a divorce until the expiration of 60 days after the divorce Petition was filed. Moreover, if there are children involved in the divorce, parties are best advised that a judge always retains jurisdiction to determine the best interests of the minor children and may rule accordingly--despite any contrary agreement by the parties. How does the "divorce hotel" concept intend to handle these issues? Time will tell. Below is a link to the article.
