Common household products can lead to false-positive marijuana tests

A recent study found that common shampoos, soaps and moisturizers commonly leads to false positive test results. Although the precise mechanism is unknown, common ingredients can confuse the test. This particular study focused on baby products, although the ingredients that are causing the problem are used in other products.

The purpose of the study was to determine why so many infants were testing postive for marijuana. Currently, twelve states require routine testing on infants for marijuana, which results may be reported to appropriate agencies for investigation for drug offenses or possible child endangerment.

If you are already on probation or parole, a false positive can lead to a revocation motion. If this happens, contact a criminal defense attorney immediately to explore your options.
